Is it hard to write in another language?
It depends on what kind of text are you writing. I usually write common words, such ones used for basic communication, at the level of talking.
One day, earlier this week, I had to write a wording where I should choose the theme of what I would be writing. I felt totally unprepared. I never imagined that was so hard to write something in English, different from what I do every day while talking to my friends.
I began by thinking of something I usually read a lot about, like environmental changes and sustainability. At first it seemed ok for me to write about it, but when I started it seemed that my memory wouldn't help me to remember the words I needed to finish my text.
I almost started panicking, but instead, I held my breath, started to breath slowly (like one of my friends, who is a psychoanalyst, recommended me doing at these occasions) and then some words I needed to write came to my mind, and finally I could start. But starting was not enough. Again, I needed the words but they weren’t on my mind, I couldn’t remember them. At this point I hadn’t much time left, so I looked on my smart-phone for something that could help me, or I wouldn’t make the text on the time that was left for me to do so. It was a shame, but I had to do it because was very important that I could produce such text.
I don’t want to be unprepared again, so I guess I'm going to start reading books and magazines, as much as possible, for me to be able to write in English, as well as I’m able to do in Portuguese.
